Mr. Sukanto Tanoto |
Mister Sukanto Tanoto is considered to be
one of the wealthiest individuals in Indonesia. Mr. Tanoto is the founder of
Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Ltd (APRIL) which produces
hardwood kraft pulp and uncoated, wood-free paper. APRIL’s main branch is PT Riau
Andalan Pulp & Paper ( PT RAPP), the biggest paper pulp mill in the world.
In 1973,
Mr. Sukanto Tanoto founded APRIL, which would grow into the owner of one of the
world's largest pulp and paper mills. When APRIL began plantation in Pelalawan Kerinci
the population was at a low 200 which would grow into a staggering 200,000 in

APRIL Group
has employed thousands of people and was measured to devote 6.9% of Riau’s
economic outcome.
APRIL’s mill located in Pangkalan Kerinci
is one of the top 5 BEST pulp and paper mills in the WORLD!! Their mills are
extremely conservative with the natural resources it consumes, so much so that
90% of the water it uses gets recycled and 85% of the energy it uses are
renewable, which means that it can be reused and won’t run out. More facts like

APRIL
always makes sure that the areas they use for plantation are not sensitive, if
they end up with one of those areas, they work to conserve the land and since
2005, APRIL Group has undertaken High Conservation Value (HCV) assessments.
These precautions recognize land areas that needs to be conserved and
protected. 51% of the total hectares of
land APRIL Group manages, are conserved, the rest are used for plantation. APRIL
group once worked with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to address illegal issues
happening in Tesso Nilo.
As with any
factory, the safety of the employees is of the outmost importance. APRIL
Group’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) are responsible for maintaining
health and safety within the workspace. The OHS has incorporated 6 holistic
pillars which stands for
1. Training
2. Occupation Health & Safety
3. Inspection
4. Internal Audit
5. External Audit
6. Monitoring
These
pillars are meant to reinforce a commitment to a safer environment for the
workers. These approaches have been dubbed successful as injuries has decreased
with a whopping 79% since 2010.
In 1981
Sukanto Tanoto and his wife Tinah Bingei Tanoto started the Tanoto Foundation
to help poverty stricken people out of belief that everyone deserves a right to
education regardless of their historical background. The Tanoto Foundation has
included improvement programs to over 200 schools across Riau, Jambi, and North
